So a forking and dongle joke at pycon cost people their jobs. The person who called out the joke is found guilty of being a hypocrite in internet court. The evidence? A TSA sock joke days before. It’s a sad day for everyone involved.
While I understand Adria’s position, I just can’t help but feel that this was handled poorly by all parties. I would like to think having daughters though gives me a better perspective on this. I wouldn’t want my daughters to feel bad about going into the technology or science fields. Nor would I want them to publicly shame someone as a response to an off color joke. In the end I feel very conflicted about this. Part of me says good on her, she’s helping make the technology world more friendly for women. The other part of me wants to say its a joke get over it and move on. Let people be asshats if they want too.
At the end of the day with the steady rise of women in these technology field does martyring your self like this really accomplish anything? One thing is for sure, everyone is going to more careful about what they say and when they say it.
